Jason O’Mara has joined the cast of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D., EW has learned.
Details on the Terra Nova and Good Wife alum’s role are being kept under wraps, but EW can confirm he’s playing a character whose Marvel roots go back to the 1940s.
“Bringing Jason into the mix as the New Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. forces everyone, particularly Coulson, to reevaluate their role in the Agency,” said Jeph Loeb, executive producer and Marvel’s head of TV. “Jason has both the physical presence and acting dynamics that will connect with and challenge even the most loyal agent.”
As revealed during a six-month time jump in the finale, Coulson (Clark Gregg) was no longer the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., with some speculating that Agent May (Ming-Naw Wen) had taken over the role. Bringing in entirely new leadership may come as a result of S.H.I.E.L.D. stepping back into the public eye.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
